Industry Classification
Industries are defined using the six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). This is a detailed hierarchical system that classifies businesses according to the type of economic activity and usually assigned at a very granular level of the primary business activity of a single establishment. These activities can be very general (for example, 'mining', assigned a two digit code) through to the very specific (such as 'silver ore mining', assigned a six digit code). It is primarily at the most detailed, the six digit level, that trade is recorded.
There are 21 industries at the high, two-digit level, each assigned its own colour in Arium's Trade Analysis Tool. Examples of these industries include agriculture, manufacturing and retailing. At a detailed, six-digit level, there are more than 1,000 different industry classifications. Every node sharing the same colour in the network map is part of the same high-level industry.

Sector Classification
'Sectoral' classifications are used by the global financial community usually to assign public companies to a particular sector. One such high-level sectoral classification is applied here at the highest level to the trading subsidiaries, so you can see how many of the subsidiaries of a listed company are in the same sector and the trading links within and between sectors.
The 10 different high-level sectors are also colour-coded. Users can flip between industry and sector classifications by clicking a button at the bottom of the network map.
